Pitching was the name of the game in the 2008 Indiana Mr. Baseball Classic held at North Central High School. You would have to say that. Well, maybe. The pitching of the Blue Team was awesome. But, the Blue Team also pounded out a total of 24 hits while sweeping a pair of 8-inning games from the Red, 10-2 in the opener and 9-7 in the nightcap. Yes, there was offense, but the pitching show put on by the Blue Team in the opener stole the spotlight. Blue Team coaches Dick Alter of Indianapolis Lutheran and Kyle Kraemer of Terre Haute South sent eight different hurlers to the mound in the opening game. Combined, they allowed only three hits and they fanned 17 batters. The two runs scored by the Red Team came in the eighth and both were unearned. Crawfordsville’s Andrew Swart started the strikeout parade by fanning three in the opening inning. Benjamin Walters of Beech Grove struckout two in the second, Cameron Hobson of Crawfordsville three in the third, Joe Goodman of Paoili two in the fourth, B.J. Sieverding of South Ripley two in the fifth, Daniel Bollenbacher of South Adams two in the sixth, Tyler Ware of Seeger two in the seventh. and Dominic Spadafora of Carroll two in the eighth. The hurling by the Blue was some kind of show as Hoosier Diamond brought together the state’s top seniors just hours before Mr. Baseball ballots were distributed by HD president Jeff Jellison to coaches throughout the state. The Blue Team did well at the plate, too, hammering out 12 hits. Koby Kraemer, an infielder from Terre Haute South, belted two doubles and drove home three runs. Spadafora, the pitcher from Carroll, hammered a home run. Indianapolis Lutheran infielder Jared Broughton and Rhett Goodmiller, a catcher from Norwell, each slammed a double. There also was impressive pitching by the Red Team, coached by Phil McIntyre of North Central and Al Cooper of New Palestine. Greensburg’s Alex Meyer fanned the side in order in the first. New Palestine’s Patrick Kraft had strong innings in the second and third. For the Red Team, Ian Nielsen of LaPorte hit a double and Jake Hansen of Westfield and Tyler Calder of Yorktown each had a single. There was more offense from both teams in the second game. Leading the Blue Team to victory with two hits each were Radley Hdaddad of Brebeuf and Spadafora of Carroll. Spadafora, who was 3-for-4 in the in double header, added a double to go along with his first-game homer. Also doubling for the Blue Team were Joshua Ludy of Jay County and Broughton of Luterhan. Leading the Red Team at the plate were Heritage Christian catcher Josh Lyon with a triple and single, Fishers catcher Matt Hitt with a three-run double and Franklin’s Brad Hook with a pair of singles. Tyler Spillner of Fort Wayne Northrop hit a double. Following voting by Indiana’s high school coaches, Hoosier Diamond will name Mr. Baseball and present him a plaque at the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association’s North-South banquet in South Bend on July 11.
