April 12, 2008
Southern Indiana is loaded with talent this spring
in the 2008 and 2009 classes and has several top
notch programs that will challenge for state
titles at 2A, 3A, and 4A in baseball.
In 4A, Castle and Evansville North appear to be
set for solid seasons. Evansville North's squad
returns starters Dave Johnson (P, 1B), Zach
Wilkinson (C), Reese Rounder (IF), Kraig Petty (P,DH,
OF), Houston Dillman (OF), Tyler Pike (IF), and
Justin Horstman. That gives them 7 solid
returning veteran players from a team that
finished in the middle of the pack in the rugged
SIAC last spring. Castle returns starters Tyler
Boink (P), Robbie Ort (IF), Graham Saiko (IF,OF),
Adam Culliver (P) from a team that lost to
eventual 4A State Champions Indianapolis Cathedral
in the semi-state championship game. Evansville
Harrison and Evansville Central won't be slouches
either with Harrison being led by 4 year varsity
outfielder Jordan Chavis, Devin Anderson(P,3B),and
2009 grads Austin Cope (P,SS), Daniel Kissel
(1B,P). Central returns Drew Barrett, who has two
brothers that have already played at the next
level. Drew looks to be headed that same
direction as a pitcher/infielder. The Bears also
feature Sr. pitcher, Brandon Flora, a 6'2"" lefty
that has come into his own in the past 12 months,
and will get help from returning starters Kyle
Mangold, Josh Chamberlain, and Kent Crick.
In 3A, Evansville Memorial and Mt. Vernon
should be the top of the group since last year's
state runner-up Mater Dei moves down to 2A this
spring. Memorial boasts 3 Sr. pitchers all with
significant varsity success- left Dean Stuckey,
and righthanders Kendall Wahl and Nathan Sansing,
plus Jr. Tyler Holt to back them up on the mound.
Adam Mayer (SS), Cord Morales (C), and Nathan
Hillenbrand also return with varsity success from
2007's spring to give them hopes for a solid
2008. Mt. Vernon has two of the better
righthanded arms on the mound in Seniors Hensley
(90+) and David (90+), plus returning Stemple
brothers (Chris and Eric), catcher Jared Conville,
and Jordan Hamblin that all made significant
contributions on the varsity team that at one time
was ranked 6th in 3A last year. Jasper will be
led by Jr. SS Ian Boone, who will play with the
Indiana Bulls this summer and they will be a tough
out come tournament time too for sure.
In 2A, three teams stand out, led by defending
state champion South Spencer and their lefthanded
superman and IU early signee, Blake Monar, who
will likely be a fairly high draft come June.
Problem with them is that they graduated much of
the rest of their championship team, but their
experienced head coach Brian Kuester will likely
make them into a serious contender come June.
Right on their heels and maybe even alongside or
ahead of them would be the aforementioned Mater
Dei group that surprised lots of people by making
it all the way to last year's 3A title game
against Norwell and Jarrod Parker, who was the 9th
overall player chosen in last year's draft. Mater
Dei steps down to 2A this spring and returns 6 of
their 10 starters from that team; however, the
three of the players not returning are the three
senior pitchers that carryied them on their run.
MD's returners are Jake Weinzapfel (IF), Hank
LaRue (IF,P), Joe Major (C,P), Alex Weinzapfel
(CF), Reid Grossman (P,DH, 1B), and Corey Lipking
(P,DH,1B). North Posey is the third 2A team that
looks solid this spring with 9 seniors on their
squad to bolster their chances. Braxton Williams
leads that group

Attica's Colt Stephenson threw a one
hitter April 7th 2008 against Turkey Run
to secure the win. Stephenson threw 14
strike outs in 5 innings and went 2-3
with 5 RBIs. Score Attica 15-Turkey Run

Jarrod Parker, who last season was named Indiana's 2007
Mr. Baseball by Hoosier Diamond, may be back in Indiana
playing baseball this summer. Parker led his Norwell High
School team to the 2007 state championship.
In an article written by Steve Gilbert on the
MLB.com web-site, it was
reported that Parker, now a member of the Arizona
Diamondbacks organization, may be assigned this summer to
Class A South Bend, just a few miles north of Parker's
hometown. It is expected that the Diamondbacks will limit
Parker to 115-125 innings this summer.
"For a kid right out of high school, he wasn't
overmatched by anything here (spring training)," said
Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin. "I told him he should take
a lot of confidence out the experience," Melvin was quoted
in Gilbert's story.

*Brownsburg's 2005 Hoosier Diamond Mr. Baseball,
Lance Lynn, is 4-0 for nationally-ranked University of
Mississippi. 2007 All-Star Drew Storen is 1-1 with 2 saves
for Stanford University. Ball State freshman T.J. Baumet is
hitting at a .341 clip and Sean Gaston is hitting .312 at
Notre Dame. How about those Bulldogs!

*Zack Osman, a first-team all-state
outfielder from Marquette Catholic, won the leadoff position
in University of Chicago's batting lineup and his first
collegiate at bat will be in Japan in front of 25,000 fans.
He is a freshman at Chicago.

*After 13 games, Matt Dodaro, a junior
from Lake Central High School, is hitting .311 for the
Wabash College team. He has four doubles and has driven home
six runs. Joey Niezer, a junior from Oldenburg Acadmey, has
a 2.11 ERA and has fanned 22 batters in 21 innings.

after 15 games, is hitting .333 for Rose-Hulman, He has four
